I will start with the object in discussion.
I had seen this mound of trash in their bathroom, so I took it and bundled it up tight and threw it right in their footpath. (where they put on their lipgloss, brush teeth and wash hands)
I wanted to see how long it would take for one of my kiddos to actually throw this little guy away especially because of where I put it: UP AND CENTER.
So here's how it went.
In devotions I reminded them how gramps always said, "if you see a need, try to meet it." That was why you would find him riding on his golf cart at church picking up trash in the parking lot. Or you would see him fixing broken things around the properties. Gramps was a guy that didn't have any reservations in getting in there and getting the job done. I have always admired that about him.
"If you see a need, try to meet it." I encouraged my kids. (thinking this would only take a moment or two)
Okay, so I prepped me kiddos and off they went on their whimsical ways.
I watched, I waited. Then I reminded them about brushing their teeth (I guess I became the catalyst in this test)
They all came in to brush their teethes; still the bag sat right there.
WHAT!!! (Seriously, I started to giggle. But then wondered why they all just left it) They left it again.
We all went to bed. Still the bag was sitting there. (poor bag)
I checked in the morning.
The bag was still there.
Are you kidding me? Doesn't anyone see it, I thought to myself. I wonder just how long this was going to last.
Finally, the bag was moved.
I was excited to see that one of my kiddos actually picked it up, but that only lasted a minute when I found where they put it.
One of my kids picked up the trash bag and threw it in the hallway.
WHAT!!!!
Okay, I had to step in. (In hind sight, I should have left it there and really seen how long it was going to circulate around the house but we had company coming over and I wasn't sure I wanted to share my experiment with them)lol
So I ended up asking, "Who put this trash in the Hall?" (I know scientist shouldn't intervene in the process but it was now the end of the expedient and time for explanations.)
"Me", came the reply.
"Why?" came my question.
"So somebody could throw it away!" came the reasoning.
"So, does that what 'if you see a need meat it' mean," I inquired.
"Hummm,no,"came the confession.
"Okay so here's the need: trash needs to be thrown away. Do you think you can do that?" came the challenge.
"Okay," was the response.
Finally, the trash got to it's rightful place.
I had to laugh so hard. Sometimes things are very clear in our heads. We really think we are communicating effectively, but reality is Sometimes they just don't get it no matter how hard we try. Don't give up, they'll get it eventually. I am hoping. lol
I still laugh to think they just threw, kicked, pushed, or carried the trash to the hallway and dropped it so "someone could through it out"
By the way,
GUESS WHO THAT SOMEONE IS?
Yip, ME>
Blessings.
