Psalm of Asaph
O God, the nations have come into Your inheritance;
Your holy temple they have defiled;
They have laid Jerusalem in heaps.
Psa 79:2
The dead bodies of Your servants
They have given as food for the birds of the heavens,
The flesh of Your saints to the beasts of the earth.
Psa 79:3
Their blood they have shed like water all around Jerusalem,
And there was no one to bury them.
Psa 79:4
We have become a reproach to our neighbors,
A scorn and derision to those who are around us.
Psa 79:5
How long, LORD?
Will You be angry forever?
Will Your jealousy burn like fire?
Psa 79:6
Pour out Your wrath on the nations that do not know You,
And on the kingdoms that do not call on Your name.
Psa 79:7
For they have devoured Jacob,
And laid waste his dwelling place.
Psa 79:8
Oh, do not remember former iniquities against us!
Let Your tender mercies come speedily to meet us,
For we have been brought very low.
Psa 79:9
Help us, O God of our salvation,
For the glory of Your name;
And deliver us, and provide atonement for our sins,
For Your name’s sake!
Psa 79:10
Why should the nations say,
“Where is their God?”
Let there be known among the nations in our sight
The avenging of the blood of Your servants which has beenshed.
Psa 79:11
Let the groaning of the prisoner come before You;
According to the greatness of Your power
Preserve those who are appointed to die;
Psa 79:12
And return to our neighbors sevenfold into their bosom
Their reproach with which they have reproached You, O Lord.
Psa 79:13
So we, Your people and sheep of Your pasture,
Will give You thanks forever;
We will show forth Your praise to all generations.

My Thoughts
Israel was a nation that time and time again were conquered by various armies. Many times God would allow foreign countries to destroy Israel because of Israel's constant idolatry. Over and over the nation would cycle in reference for the Lord to complete turning their back on Him. It truly was a various grievous time for them here in this Psalm. But one thing you could count on, at some point at some time in the judgment God would relent and come to their rescue.
I like that.
God has a perfect way of letting consequences happen in our lives, especially if we in rebellion, to get our attention to focus back on Him.
Verse 1-7
Here shows how horrible the destruction was on the Israelites. It was awful. But in the remembrance of the wicked a prayer is birthed.
Verse 5-6
How long, LORD?
Will You be angry forever?
Will Your jealousy burn like fire?
Pour out Your wrath on the nations that do not know You,
And on the kingdoms that do not call on Your name.
This is Asaph's hearts cry in the midst of all this destruction. It was as if he was saying, "God you got do something here. Don't let these heathens do this to those who fear you."
What a cry for help!!!
Verse 8
Oh, do not remember former iniquities against us!
Let Your tender mercies come speedily to meet us,
For we have been brought very low.
In humility Asaph cries out to God. You see the iniquities (or sin) of Israel was constant and it was for this reason that the Lord allowed them to be judged.They had been brought very low and were in desperate need of a Savior.
Have you ever been to this point in your life?
Here is an acknowledgement of sin and a cry for help.
Have you ever cried out to God, "Let your mercies come speedily".
I know I have. Every morning that I awake with a heavy heart, I say "Your mercies are new every morning, Great is thy faithfulness of God."
It is God's faithfulness that we make it through each day, really.
It's never a bad thing to cry out for mercy.
Verse 9
Help us, O God of our salvation,
For the glory of Your name;
And deliver us, and provide atonement for our sins,
For Your name’s sake!
Again, they acknowledge that is was because of sin and the only one to forgive was God.
They new it was because of what they had done wrong and yet they still cried out to God.
I like that.
No matter what we have done in our lives, no matter how far we have gone, God is still willing to forgive and deliver as we call upon Him.
"For Your Name Sake"
Lord, this is your land, your people, Help, Comes the Cry from Asaph.
Verse 10
Why should the nations say,
“Where is their God?”
Let there be known among the nations in our sight
The avenging of the blood of Your servants which has beenshed.
I couldn't help but raise my hands up and pray this prayer over America. I know I know we haven't had this devastation here, but I kept thinking of how people in society are trying the tear our Godly roots from American History. To me it's as if they are saying, "Where is their God?".
Do you feel like that too?
Have you seen such a push from the school systems, from government, from anywhere public? It's ridiculous.
Our family took a trip to Washington DC last year and we were amazed at the monuments and how they acknowledge God all over the place. How can people be so blinded now?
Even the monuments are in a shape of a cross, if you look from a birds eye view. I don't think that was random. I think it was perfectly planned. Yet this nation time and time again cries out against the things of God.
The other day my husband was witnessing to student in front of a school and the teachers yelled at him, called the police. Even the Bible leader was discouraging him from sharing with the kids. How ridiculous!!!
How is it that when we talk about God in America people act as if you are dangerous and yet the police are given special protocol in dealing with women of Islamic faith?
Is this right? Is this so different from when our forefathers came to this place?
Think about it.
SO can you see why my heart was so overwhelmed when I read this Psalm. I was crying out for God to heal America and bring her back to her godly heritage.
Verse11
Let the groaning of the prisoner come before You;
According to the greatness of Your power
Preserve those who are appointed to die;
Here again crying out for God to intervene. I hope Christians don't become prisoners here in America, but honestly the way things are progressing I won't be surprised if it comes to that.
Here it's talking about Israel and time and time again they were in prisoned and taken as slaves. Oh that God would save them again, went the cry of Asaph.
Verse 13
So we, Your people and sheep of Your pasture,
Will give You thanks forever;
We will show forth Your praise to all generations.
I like this verse. Asaph acknowledges that they are God's sheep of His pasture. Israel didn't stop being God's people just because they were in sin, they just had to endure the consequences of their sin.
I like how he assumes the close and says "will give you thanks forever, we will show forth your praise to all generations.
No matter what is happening in life, God is worthy of our thanks and praise.
May we keep praising and keep thanking God for all that He has done,has planned to do, and is doing.
Blessings
