To the Chief Musician. A Contemplationfn of the sons of Korah.
As the deer pants for the water brooks,
So pants my soul for You, O God.
Psa 42:2
My soul thirsts for God, for the living God.
When shall I come and appear before God?fn
Psa 42:3
My tears have been my food day and night,
While they continually say to me,
“Where is your God?”
Psa 42:4
When I remember these things,
I pour out my soul within me.
For I used to go with the multitude;
I went with them to the house of God,
With the voice of joy and praise,
With a multitude that kept a pilgrim feast.
Psa 42:5
Why are you cast down, O my soul?
And why are you disquieted within me?
Hope in God, for I shall yet praise Him
For the help of His countenance.fn
Psa 42:6
O my God,fn my soul is cast down within me;
Therefore I will remember You from the land of the Jordan,
And from the heights of Hermon,
From the Hill Mizar.
Psa 42:7
Deep calls unto deep at the noise of Your waterfalls;
All Your waves and billows have gone over me.
Psa 42:8
The LORD will command His lovingkindness in the daytime,
And in the night His song shall be with me--
A prayer to the God of my life.
Psa 42:9
I will say to God my Rock,
“Why have You forgotten me?
Why do I go mourning because of the oppression of the enemy?”
Psa 42:10
As with a breaking of my bones,
My enemies reproach me,
While they say to me all day long,
“Where is your God?”
Psa 42:11
Why are you cast down, O my soul?
And why are you disquieted within me?
Hope in God;
For I shall yet praise Him,
The help of my countenance and my God.

My Thoughts
Do you ever self talk? Do you know what that is? It's where you actually talk to yourself to help get through a situation. Over in the Psalms, David would talk to himself to get him through a difficulty. He would even command himself at times. It usually was when he was down cast or fighting sadness in his heart.
For Example:
Why are you cast down, O my soul?
And why are you disquieted within me?
Hope in God;
For I shall yet praise Him,
The help of my countenance and my God.
He's essentially reasoning with himself to get beyond his emotions to the facts of God's present help in time of trouble.
Notice here, his emotions are plunging his heart down down down, and he's wrestling with them.
Have you ever wrestled with your emotions?
I know I have. Sometimes they try to overtake me and keep me bound in hopelessness. We need to fight through them and put them where they belong and in their proper place.
Being over run in emotions, David starts to talk himself through this.
Why am I sad? Why am I feeling this way?
Sometimes we know the whys of the situation, sometimes not. Yet, no matter why, we need
to do what David did next: command himself to HOPE in God.
Command yourself: HOPE in GOD.
Start thinking of God's promises, God's word, God's faithfulness.
We have Him to shield us through the storms of life. We need to be focused on His deliverance.
Then David actively does something to help counter act all of this: Praise.
You know we need to replace harmful thoughts with Praise.
Praise changes things. Praise send the powers of spiritual darkness away.
Praise Him, Praise Him.
Find something you love about the Lord today and praise Him.
I bet you will find that your mind and heart and emotions will get into balance.
Emotions in there rightful place are wonderful, it's when we are over taken by them and led into depressions that we've given them too much power.
If you find yourself like that today, think, hope, meditate on God's goodness, then turn on
worship music and praise the Lord.
Sometimes just turning on a song will help me get out of depressive thoughts.
Look at this beautiful verse here:
The LORD will command His lovingkindness in the daytime,
And in the night His song shall be with me--
A prayer to the God of my life.
David new that God was with him in the morning and through till night. The song shall be with me. Grab a hold of a song and sing it over and over. I find that helps me.
Truly, God will elevate your heart and put a smile back on your face.
Go ahead and Try it. Smile.
