Psa 49:1
To the Chief Musician. A Psalm of the sons of Korah.
Hear this, all peoples;
Give ear, all inhabitants of the world,
Psa 49:2
Both low and high,
Rich and poor together.
Psa 49:3
My mouth shall speak wisdom,
And the meditation of my heart shall give understanding.
Psa 49:4
I will incline my ear to a proverb;
I will disclose my dark saying on the harp.
Psa 49:5
Why should I fear in the days of evil,
When the iniquity at my heels surrounds me?
Psa 49:6
Those who trust in their wealth
And boast in the multitude of their riches,
Psa 49:7
None of them can by any means redeem his brother,
Nor give to God a ransom for him--
Psa 49:8
For the redemption of their souls is costly,
And it shall cease forever--
Psa 49:9
That he should continue to live eternally,
And not see the Pit.
Psa 49:10
For he sees wise men die;
Likewise the fool and the senseless person perish,
And leave their wealth to others.
Psa 49:11
Their inner thought is that their houses will last forever,fn
Their dwelling places to all generations;
They call their lands after their own names.
Psa 49:12
Nevertheless man, though in honor, does not remain;fn
He is like the beasts that perish.
Psa 49:13
This is the way of those who are foolish,
And of their posterity who approve their sayings. Selah
Psa 49:14
Like sheep they are laid in the grave;
Death shall feed on them;
The upright shall have dominion over them in the morning;
And their beauty shall be consumed in the grave, far from their dwelling.
Psa 49:15
But God will redeem my soul from the power of the grave,
For He shall receive me. Selah
Psa 49:16
Do not be afraid when one becomes rich,
When the glory of his house is increased;
Psa 49:17
For when he dies he shall carry nothing away;
His glory shall not descend after him.
Psa 49:18
Though while he lives he blesses himself
(For men will praise you when you do well for yourself),
Psa 49:19
He shall go to the generation of his fathers;
They shall never see light.
Psa 49:20
A man who is in honor, yet does not understand,
Is like the beasts that perish.

My Thoughts
This Psalm read more like a proverb. A proverb of a rich man without the knowledge of God. What a contrast between a life of luxury without Christ and a life lived for Christ. It's something to think about for sure. I guess that's why there are 2 selahs here. It's something to pause and consider.
This Psalm speaks a lot to me lately because a friend of mine just past away. No, she wasn't rich like the Psalm is talking about, yet the reality is the same for us all: we don't take any Earthly possession with us when we die (Verse 10).
I think of all the years of sweat and tears we go through, laboring for this life, and one day it will be over. Makes me think. Makes me start to think about what I am striving for. Makes me just stop and think, "am I living for what matters?"
For my friend, she did. I know when she entered the Heavenly gates, she had a victors finish. At 91 years of age, she was still serving the Lord, still loving Him and those around her. What a legacy.
I think of the verse in Romans 14:8
For if we live, we live to the Lord; and if we die, we die to the Lord. Therefore, whether we live or die, we are the Lord’s.
For those of us that love the Lord, rich or poor, we are the Lords'.
Here in the Psalm, they are speaking of someone who doesn't have this hope, and it's sad. To think of all the men and women who strive for riches but have no eternal security, is a sobering thought.
We are born with nothing and we leave with nothing, but our souls.
Verse 15 just made me smile to know my friend was received by the Lord.
When I think of the grave, I feel so relieved to know that God has redeemed me.
Psa 49:15
But God will redeem my soul from the power of the grave,
For He shall receive me. Selah
Amen. Hundreds of years before Christ, they understood this idea of redemption.
But moving forward, it was Jesus that made redemption possible.
Jesus defeated death and the grave; He overcame.
1 Corn 15:56-57
“O Death, where is your sting?fn
O Hades, where is your victory?”fn
The sting of death is sin, and the strength of sin is the law.
But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.
I am so thankful, so very thankful. Jesus came and conquered death.
My beloved Grandpa has this verse written on his grave.
2 Cor 5:1
For we know that if our earthly house, this tent, is destroyed, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens.
He too moved to his heavenly dwelling.
Do you long for heaven? I know I do. I love this life and my family and that's what keeps me enjoying Earth, yet heaven is going to be a million times more amazing. I can't wait.
For in this we groan, earnestly desiring to be clothed with our habitation which is from heaven,
if indeed, having been clothed, we shall not be found naked.
For we who are in this tent groan, being burdened, not because we want to be unclothed, but further clothed, that mortality may be swallowed up by life.
Now He who has prepared us for this very thing is God, who also has given us the Spirit as a guarantee.
So we are always confident, knowing that while we are at home in the body we are absent from the Lord.
For we walk by faith, not by sight.
We are confident, yes, well pleased rather to be absent from the body and to be present with the Lord.
What a beautiful thing. When we take our last breath here on the Earth, we will take our first in heaven. Rich or poor if you have Jesus, you are rich already. It's just waiting being held for you when your time is come. Now hows that for a 401K policy. :)
God is so good to give us such an excellent future and hope. Love it.
Be Blessed.
Be Blessed to know there is a better country waiting for us.
Blessings.
