A Psalm of David when he was in the wilderness of Judah.
O God, You are my God;
Early will I seek You;
My soul thirsts for You;
My flesh longs for You
In a dry and thirsty land
Where there is no water.
Psa 63:2
So I have looked for You in the sanctuary,
To see Your power and Your glory.
Psa 63:3
Because Your lovingkindness is better than life,
My lips shall praise You.
Psa 63:4
Thus I will bless You while I live;
I will lift up my hands in Your name.
Psa 63:5
My soul shall be satisfied as with marrow and fatness,
And my mouth shall praise You with joyful lips.
Psa 63:6
When I remember You on my bed,
I meditate on You in the night watches.
Psa 63:7
Because You have been my help,
Therefore in the shadow of Your wings I will rejoice.
Psa 63:8
My soul follows close behind You;
Your right hand upholds me.
Psa 63:9
But those who seek my life, to destroy it,
Shall go into the lower parts of the earth.
Psa 63:10
They shall fall by the sword;
They shall be a portion for jackals.
Psa 63:11
But the king shall rejoice in God;
Everyone who swears by Him shall glory;
But the mouth of those who speak lies shall be stopped.

My Thoughts
- Here's a song for you by Unspoken
O God, You are my God;
Early will I seek You;
My soul thirsts for You;
My flesh longs for You
In a dry and thirsty land
Where there is no water.
David is using his bodily thirst to show how he longs spiritually for God. I am sure David understood what it meant to be thirsty since he was in the desert, yet he wasn't going to let his body rule over him. So many times we allow our body appetites to rule and dominate us. We focus on the flesh and not the spirit. As children of God, we need to keep these appetites in their proper place. For example, I struggle with good. For a time there, every morning when I would awake, the first thing on my mind was: Food. I love food. I always have. Even since I was a baby. But the older I got, the more and more that appetite was trying to rule over my body and mind. I remember thinking, this is bad. I think of meals all day long. Finally, I was convicted and asked the Lord to help me put in it proper order. I did get victory and now when I awake, the first thing I do is talk to God. I am no longer ruled by that appetite, and I am so thankful. I want my cravings to be more about God then this earthly life.
Do you hunger and thirst for God in your soul? I know I do. There really is only one place to get complete fulfillment; it's in Jesus.
Jesus understood this longing and tells us what to do in the New Testament. He says,
“I am the bread of life. He who comes to Me shall never hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst." John 6:35
Jesus is the answer to the longing thirsty soul.
Here on Earth we will always have thirsts and hungers physically, but there is coming a day were that will be a thing of the past. Look here what it says in Revelation about our future.
“They shall neither hunger anymore nor thirst anymore; the sun shall not strike them, nor any heat;
for the Lamb who is in the midst of the throne will shepherd them and lead them to living fountains of waters.fn And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.” Rev 7:16-17
I just love that. I love the fact that one day our lives will be so enriched in God's presence that we will not need anything. So exciting.
You know David knew God was the source of fulfillment. He longed for God and committed himself to seeking God. The key for David was to worship God.
(vers 3-5)
Because Your lovingkindness is better than life,
My lips shall praise You.
Thus I will bless You while I live;
I will lift up my hands in Your name.
My soul shall be satisfied as with marrow and fatness,
And my mouth shall praise You with joyful lips.
His lips praises, he blesses, his hands were raised, his mouth praise and his lips were joyful.
What I love about David, is that he saw God's power and strength. He knew God was able and he relied on God to show up every time. That's why he praised God. He knew by praising God, that he was going to find victory. Every time.
Praise is wonderful, powerful, and completely able to break down walls were we thought there was no way.
(Verse 6-7)
When I remember You on my bed,
I meditate on You in the night watches.
Because You have been my help,
Therefore in the shadow of Your wings I will rejoice.
Think of it. David has to sleep in the wilderness. He wasn't nestled in a home, or RV, he was vulnerable to the elements. Yet, as he goes to bed, he thinks on God and rejoices. Have you ever fallen asleep at night by just praising God? Have you ever just thought upon God before you go to bed. Try it. I think there is something so wonderful about letting our minds focus on God before we sleep. Focus on the good He did that day. Focus on His presence. I think we just might get that sweet sleep we've been looking for.
Growing up we used to say our prayers before bed. I like that. I need to pass that on to my kids.
(verse 8)
My soul follows close behind You;
Your right hand upholds me.
I love this. My soul follows close behind the Lord. For some reason, I just get a picture of a shepherd and his sheep. I want to be close behind. Then God upholds me.
I just want to think of the strong arm of the Lord just carrying me today. Being satisfied in His presence and resting in His arms. Doesn't that sound like an amazing place to be? yes, for me yes in deed.
Let the Lord just carry you today. If you are hungry or thirsty, weak or weary, just rejoice in God and rest in His unfailing love.
(verse 11)
But the king shall rejoice in God;
Everyone who swears by Him shall glory;
But the mouth of those who speak lies shall be stopped.
Again, no matter what others were doing, David was chose to rejoice in God.
Let God arise in your hearts and minds today.
I know this is helping me push through a difficult time.
He's going to see you through. Keep on singing keep on praising.
How about you?
Here's the song for you to listen to again now that you've gone through this Psalm.
