Psa 71:1
In You, O LORD, I put my trust;
Let me never be put to shame.
Psa 71:2
Deliver me in Your righteousness, and cause me to escape;
Incline Your ear to me, and save me.
Psa 71:3
Be my strong refuge,
To which I may resort continually;
You have given the commandment to save me,
For You are my rock and my fortress.
Psa 71:4
Deliver me, O my God, out of the hand of the wicked,
Out of the hand of the unrighteous and cruel man.
Psa 71:5
For You are my hope, O Lord GOD;
You are my trust from my youth.
Psa 71:6
By You I have been upheld from birth;
You are He who took me out of my mother’s womb.
My praise shall be continually of You.
Psa 71:7
I have become as a wonder to many,
But You are my strong refuge.
Psa 71:8
Let my mouth be filled with Your praise
And with Your glory all the day.
Psa 71:9
Do not cast me off in the time of old age;
Do not forsake me when my strength fails.
Psa 71:10
For my enemies speak against me;
And those who lie in wait for my life take counsel together,
Psa 71:11
Saying, “God has forsaken him;
Pursue and take him, for there is none to deliver him.”
Psa 71:12
O God, do not be far from me;
O my God, make haste to help me!
Psa 71:13
Let them be confounded and consumed
Who are adversaries of my life;
Let them be covered with reproach and dishonor
Who seek my hurt.
Psa 71:14
But I will hope continually,
And will praise You yet more and more.
Psa 71:15
My mouth shall tell of Your righteousness
And Your salvation all the day,
For I do not know their limits.
Psa 71:16
I will go in the strength of the Lord GOD;
I will make mention of Your righteousness, of Yours only.
Psa 71:17
O God, You have taught me from my youth;
And to this day I declare Your wondrous works.
Psa 71:18
Now also when I am old and grayheaded,
O God, do not forsake me,
Until I declare Your strength to this generation,
Your power to everyone who is to come.
Psa 71:19
Also Your righteousness, O God, is very high,
You who have done great things;
O God, who is like You?
Psa 71:20
You, who have shown me great and severe troubles,
Shall revive me again,
And bring me up again from the depths of the earth.
Psa 71:21
You shall increase my greatness,
And comfort me on every side.
Psa 71:22
Also with the lute I will praise You--
And Your faithfulness, O my God!
To You I will sing with the harp,
O Holy One of Israel.
Psa 71:23
My lips shall greatly rejoice when I sing to You,
And my soul, which You have redeemed.
Psa 71:24
My tongue also shall talk of Your righteousness all the day long;
For they are confounded,
For they are brought to shame
Who seek my hurt.
In You, O LORD, I put my trust;
Let me never be put to shame.

My Thoughts
David experienced so much in his life. Young and old he was challenged constantly warring and constantly turning to the Lord for help.
It doesn't matter our age, God is there for us always. Walking with God is an everyday thing. When I graduated from Bible College, I thought I was at the height of my experience with God. Yet, years later I realize that there was so much more to learn and get to know about God. We really can't rely on what we did in the past for the Lord to validate our relationship today. We need to daily walk with Him. (I'm not talking about works based religion, I am talking about experiencing new truths in our relationship with God) It's a constantly learning and growing.
Verse 1
In You, O LORD, I put my trust;
Let me never be put to shame
This putting my trust is defined as to make refuge. I like that phrase "put my trust". To me it's as if David is saying, "I'm giving you everything to take care of." I like that. Put is a verb so it's an action it shows movement. Are we putting our Trust in the Lord today? Have you chosen to trust the Lord for refuge? He is trustworthy.
Verse 3
Be my strong refuge,
To which I may resort continually;
You have given the commandment to save me,
For You are my rock and my fortress.
Be my strong refuge. That verse jumped out of me. I can see it on a some wall art somewhere.
Be my strong refuge.
You know it reminds of of the saying, "be my valentine." Why? These short and sweet phrases can have great impact. It's as it David is saying, "I choose you God to be my strong refuge. I want you to defend me. I am going to make you my refuge always."
Look how often David said he can go to God, "Resort Continually"
You know we can go to God for anything. He is there for us always. Resort in the Lord arms always. There is not better place to be.
Verse 5
For You are my hope, O Lord GOD;
You are my trust from my youth.
This is so true for David and for me too. I was blessed to know God at a very early age. I was surrounded by God's Word and truths that impacted my life forever. My grandfather was a big help in all of this and I miss him dearly. He too had a godly heritage and could say he trusted God from his youth. Thanks gramps and grams for passing that heritage on to me.
I love how God can relate to the smallest child to the eldest person.
Yesterday in Church my little daughter of 4 turned to me and said
"God talked to me mommy."
I inquired, "What did He say?"
"He asked me if I wanted Him to come in. I said yes. And He said that He would come on the roof and everyone would say 'wow'"
I smiled and watched her dance around.
Just after the worship leader sang an amazing Hymn.
Truly that place was filled with the Lord. More hands were raised in worship.
God relates to the children.
Verse 6
By You I have been upheld from birth;
You are He who took me out of my mother’s womb.
My praise shall be continually of You.
I love how this Psalm acknowledges the Lord's hand in his birth story. It's so true that God is there created us in the womb and with us to deliver us (Physically) and then (spiritually). In our society today, the human womb isn't a sacred place anymore (only to whales and creatures). It's a devastating misnomer for humanity. Here the Psalmist acknowledges the intimacy of God and man upon birth.
When I was in labor with my children, I felt God near to me. With my first one, I had a 2 or 3 visions from God. Two I remember well. One was of God's arm tied and bloody on the cross. I remember hearing I endured this for you. It helped me to endure through my 12 hours of contractions. Then I saw 3 crosses, I heard It's finished. At that movement the Dr said it was time for me to push. In just a short while, my daughter was in my arms. I know God was so close to me then. On my sons birth, God spoke to me as it was very intense. I can't remember that one as clear but I remember thinking God is with me.
I acknowledge that God helped all my children be delivered, and what a precious time that was to have God as my refuge.
Verse 8
Let my mouth be filled with Your praise
And with Your glory all the day.
Amen. What a prayer!!! Lord I pray this for me today.
Verse 9
Do not cast me off in the time of old age;
Do not forsake me when my strength fails.
From birth to death, God is by outside. These two times in life we are the most dependent on people. Infants and aged need to be helped and cared for. I am so thankful that God is near even in our elderly state. It comforts me to know that God will always be by outside.
Verse 14
But I will hope continually,
And will praise You yet more and more.
Amen. David was in such a battle. People wanted to kill him and wanted to take over his throne. Even when he was old, he still lived in such a state of unsettledness. What a hard way to live. Yet, David always went back to God for help and refuge. He always turned to praise. I like that. He said, "I will hope continually and praise you more and more."
If you are fighting a tough situation, then fight it with praise. The enemy has to flee, and our minds and hearts will take on new depths of understanding and health when we praise Him through it all.
Verse 15-16
My mouth shall tell of Your righteousness
And Your salvation all the day,
For I do not know their limits.
I will go in the strength of the Lord GOD;
I will make mention of Your righteousness, of Yours only.
Are we out speaking to people about the Lord?
Are declaring the salvation of our God?
As we are approaching Easter, it's a great time to share the Gospel Message with people. Easter is such a pivotal point for Christians: from death to life.
You say you can't? or don't have strength?
Like David, go in the strength of God.
I like his advice to make mention of God's righteousness.
When we share our testimony to people we should encourage them that Jesus imputes His righteousness on us. It shouldn't be about trying to be perfect or look how we've done these great things, no, just simply preach Jesus' love forgiveness and complete right standing to God through Him. Pretty awesome.
Verse 17-18
O God, You have taught me from my youth;
And to this day I declare Your wondrous works.
Now also when I am old and grayheaded,
O God, do not forsake me,
Until I declare Your strength to this generation,
Your power to everyone who is to come.
You know age doesn't matter in Christian service. His passion was to pass on his legacy to the next generation. The older and the younger shouldn't be so isolated from each other. The older people are called to pour into the younger generation, and the younger are to learn from the older. It seems in our culture in America that we are loosing this important ingredient in our society. It's not good.
We currently live in a community where many elderly and retired people live. Our children have been exposed to the elderly and love them. We have so many ladies that act like grandma's to them. I love it.
The other day one of these precious ladies asked my kids to pick oranges off her tree for her. They gladly went over, picker in hand, and daddy to help and picked her oranges. They learned to help and then unexpectedly she rewarded their labor with a $2 bill. How's that for education.
We need this heart of reaching out to the youth.
It's so important.
Verse 20-21
You, who have shown me great and severe troubles,
Shall revive me again,
And bring me up again from the depths of the earth.
You shall increase my greatness,
And comfort me on every side.
Life is difficult. Life is difficult. Can I get an Amen? Life is difficult yet we as Christians have a Comforter to go through this life together. We are never alone, and we have Father God promising to work all things for our good. He loves us.
No matter how the trials war, God will revive you again.
You shall be comforted by the Almighty. Press into Him in the storm and burry yourself into His arms for soon the storm will pass and you'll be ever stronger because of it.
Verse 22-23
Also with the lute I will praise You--
And Your faithfulness, O my God!
To You I will sing with the harp,
O Holy One of Israel.
My lips shall greatly rejoice when I sing to You,
And my soul, which You have redeemed.
Pick up your instruments. Sing and praise God how ever you can.
Greatly rejoice when you sing to God. Rejoice greatly.
He has redeemed our Souls.
That is something to shout about no matter what is going on in this life.
Here is a temporal journey. Heaven is our victory.
It helps me so much to praise the Lord everyday. I try to find time everyday to worship with guitar or cds or radio.
Yesterday, I worked out with a friend of mine. We put on this Christian dance music and work out hard. After ward, we went into a time of spontaneous worship and dance. We jumped around declaring the great things of God. We danced like David full of joy fully of gratitude full of praise to our God. Never did I think I would praise like that after a work out but boy it was sure exhilarating.
Praise the Lord how ever you can. Praise Him today, this hour, this minute. :)
He created you, use His creation to praise Him back.
Verse 24
My tongue also shall talk of Your righteousness all the day long;
For they are confounded,
For they are brought to shame
Who seek my hurt
Don't know what to talk about? Talk of God.
I just love it when conversation turn toward the God Talk.
Just last night at Bible Study (we host a fellowship) people were sharing their God stories. I can't tell you how exciting it is to hear others share how God has worked in their lives. Talking about God is an all day thing. Don't let it just be for Sundays. Talk about Him ALLDays.
You will see the Victories the Lord is doing. God will show it to you eventually. But before He does, praise Him in advance. He is faithful He will do it.
I like this Psalm so much because it shows God's faithfulness through the years: youth to aged.
I don't know where you started your journey with God. No matter if you were young or old, continue on to walk with Him, talk with Him, and reach out to others around you.
People are hurting and they need to hear God stories from you.
We are never too old to declare God's faithfulness.
Blessings
